OUR DIAPER CHANGING ESSENTIALS

I am writing this because sweet little Hudson developed a diaper rash at around two weeks old and we finally figured out what was causing it and it is almost entirely cleared up. I am hoping that what we’ve learned will help someone avoid a rash from developing on their baby. Diaper rash is of course super common and can be caused by something different for all babies but hopefully this helps you troubleshoot.

HERE’S OUR WINNING DIAPER CHANGE SYSTEM

  • Remove the dirty diaper. We use pampers swaddlers which we love. We haven’t had any diaper explosions and the blue line that appears when the diaper is dirty is so helpful.

  • Wipe all dirty remnants away, especially pay attention to the folds and crevices. We use hello bello wipes. They’re 99% water and a slightly better price point than water wipes. It’s best to use the cleanest wipes you can find as often the wipes can cause your babies diaper rash.

  • Once the baby is all cleaned up make sure they’re totally dry (this is what ended up solving Hudson’s diaper rash). Use a really soft dry wash cloth to gently dab between the but cheeks or any other damp areas to make sure their butt is totally dry before applying any diaper cream or a new diaper.

  • Once they’re all dry, apply a little talc-free baby powder to absorb any remaining moisture. We didn’t use baby powder at first as it’s a bit controversial (using it to start with probably would have prevented Hudson’s diaper rash to begin with). It’s important you use talc-free baby powder (you can google why if you don’t already know) and it’s best to shake it onto your hand away from baby and apply it with your fingers into the areas that can trap moisture. You do this because you don’t want the baby inhaling any of the powder.

  • Once the powder has been applied, we use penaten creamy zinc ointment which treats and prevents diaper rash to the babies bum. Don’t be afraid to use too much. The creamy penaten is better than the original in our opinion as it goes on smoother and the original ointment is a bit stickier and that friction can cause diaper rash ironically. Another thing we learned from our midwives is that you don’t need to wipe away all of the cream at every diaper change, just clean up the poop and pee and leave clean cream behind. The cream and Vaseline are there to make the wipe smoother and protect the skin.

  • Then we spread Vaseline ontop. This locks out moisture and makes your next wipe experience a lot smoother.

At the end of the day, it’s super easy for your baby to develop a diaper rash but hopefully these tips help you avoid some of our mistakes.

Another tip is to purchase a wipeable changing pad. You can just wipe it to clean it after every change and you don’t need to put it through the wash. We love ours.

One last tip, is there is very few things that breast milk doesn’t solve, or so I'm learning. You can put breast milk on the rash as well and it helps heal it. Breast milk also helps heal baby acne and you can put it in their eye if they have eye goop which could be from infection or a blocked tear duct.
