COCONUT OIL TREATMENTS

I found myself incredibly bored on Saturday. I was snowed in and didn't want to leave my condo, Nick was busy and I had already cleaned the entire condo so I decided to treat myself to an at home spa day. I had some coconut oil in my pantry so I tried out some of those coconut oil beauty treatments I have heard so much about over the last few years. I've listed the treatments I tried below along with the recipes and how I felt about each one.

coconut oil LIP SCRUB treatment

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

1 tbsp coconut oil, softened solid form

2 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp honey (optional)

u

DIRECTIONS

If your coconut oil is solid, place the coconut oil container in a bowl with hot water to help it soften. You want it soft enough that you can dig into it with a spoon. If your coconut oil is too soft and oily, place it in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. Once it your coconut oil has reached the right consistency, place one tablespoon into a small bowl, add one tablespoon of honey and mix the two together. Once they've been properly mixed together add in 2 tsp of brown sugar. Mix in the sugar and get rid of any clumps by pressing the sugar clumps down with the back of your spoon. Once you've finished combining the ingredients, move the mixture to a small container that can hold and store the product. I use a small mason jar. Place in the refridgerator to harden slightly before using. Apply to your lips in a circular motion to remove dead skin. Rinse your lips with cold water once you feel you've scrubbed your lips enough. Finally, apply your favourite chap stick. I keep my scrub in the fridge and let it soften slightly before using it again.

VERDICT

I love this lip scrub. I use it when my lips are starting to get chapped to remove any dead flakes of skin that are appearing on my lips. The scrub removes any dead skin easily and really softens your lips. I like to put on a little Chapstick after to sooth my lips and get them nice and hydrated again. I've been using bite's agave lip balm and I love it.

COCONUT OIL BODY SCRUB

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

1 tbsp coconut oil, softened solid form

2 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp honey (optional)

DIRECTIONS

This is the same recipe I used for the lip scrub. You can store and use it the same way I described above. I used this scrub on my legs, arms and fingers to take away any hang nails.

verdict

I love this body scrub, it left my skin feeling so soft and smooth. I have been buying so many different body scrubs over the years and none of them made my skin feel the way this scrub did. Even Nick commented on how soft my skin felt. I am curious to see if it helps get rid of the red bumps on my upper arms. I have always had these little ingrown hairs on my upper arms and have tried so many things to get rid of them. I will let you know if this scrub helps at all the more I use it.

NAIL STRENGTHENER AND CUTICLE CREAM

INGREDIENTS

1 tsp coconut oil

DIRECTIONS

If your coconut oil is solid, place the coconut oil container in a bowl with hot water to help it soften. Once it is soft enough to spread, rub a little bit onto your fingers, finger nails and hands. You don't need much. Once you've rubbed it in, wash your hands with cold water and then rub your hands with a towel to make sure you don't have any oil residue left on your hands.

VERDICT

I use the coconut oil on my hands after using the scrub on my hangnails. It's like magic. Honestly, I stumbled upon this by accident. I was pushing back my cuticles because it's been a while since my last manicure and I decided to put some coconut oil on my cuticles to soften the skin and moisturize it a little bit. It ended up cleaning away any imperfections in my nails, strengthening them and lengthening them over night. This is no joke. It was like magic. This worked so much better for me then any cuticle oil I had used before, plus it's way more affordable.

HAIR MASK

INGREDIENTS

2 tsp coconut oil, liquified

DIRECTIONS

If your coconut oil is solid, place the coconut oil container in a bowl with hot water to help it liquify. Once it is liquified, place one two teaspoons of coconut oil into a small bowl. Apply the oil to your hair. I dampened my hair first but I read that you can apply it to dry hair too. Once you've applied the oil to your hair, run a comb through it to really spread the oil around. Once the oil has been spread evenly throughout your hair, put it up with a clip or wrap it up into a bun. Cover your hair with a shower cap (I didn't do this) and let it sit for 1-2 hours before washing it out.

HOW TO REMOVE THE OIL FROM YOUR HAIR

The best way I found to get the oil out of my hair was to, apply conditioner to my hair for about 10 minutes before getting into the shower. Once in the shower, rinse the conditioner out of your hair, then shampoo. Let the shampoo sit in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing. Then condition once more. That should do the trick.

VERDICT

At first I was super nervous about this hair mask. After applying the oil to my hair I read a number of articles that said how hard it was to get the oil out. I immediately began to panic and washed the oil out after thirty minutes. I ran my hair under cold water and only shampooed my hair thinking that the conditioner was unnecessary but that was a huge mistake. Mistake number one: The cold water makes the oil harden and cling to your hair. Mistake number two: The conditioner helps remove the oil more than shampoo does. Once I figured out how to get the oil out of my hair, I was pleasantly surprised by how shiny and soft my hair was. It felt light, bouncy and the split ends were way less noticeable. I also read that coconut oil helps prevent grey hairs which I hope is true because I've been starting to notice some around my temples. I'll get back to you on about that once I've been using the oil mask for a while. At the end of the day, now that I know how to get the oil out of my hair, I love this mask. I noticed a huge different in my hair the next day. I am going to try and use this mask once a week (probably every saturday night) to help repair my hair after a week of blow drying, swimming in chlorinated water and heat damage from my curling iron.
